Thirty (30) Tanzanian nationals have been arrested for engaging in illegal fishing activities on Lake Victoria, specifically in the Kasensero area.
The operation was conducted by the fisheries enforcement unit operating in Mpigi and Kalungu, under the leadership of Captain Jacob Obbo. The operation was carried out last night on the orders of Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahiirwa.
Captain Obbo revealed that there had been complaints from Ugandan fishermen operating in the Kasensero area, accusing the Tanzanians of engaging in illegal fishing practices.
The suspects were found in possession of illegal fishing gear, undersized nets, unauthorized boats, and other prohibited equipment. Those arrested will be processed and taken to court to face charges.
Fishermen from various landing sites reported that the Tanzanian nationals have been a persistent problem, disrupting their activities on Lake Victoria.
The fishermen expressed their gratitude for the operation, which they believe will restore peace and order on the lake, allowing them to carry out their work without interference.
The suspects will be handed over to the legal authorities for prosecution.
