Two people have been confirmed dead, and more than 11 others sustained injuries after a Pokopoko Company bus, registration number UBR 796N, veered off the road and overturned in Mubende Municipality. The accident occurred when the bus's tire burst after hitting a pothole, causing the driver to lose control.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus's tire exploded, leading to the vehicle skidding before finally rolling onto its side. The incident caused panic among residents, who rushed to the scene to assist survivors as police worked to secure the area and evacuate the injured.
According to locals, the driver was not speeding but instead lost control due to the blown-out tire. The bus, which was traveling from Kampala to Kasese, had been carrying several passengers at the time of the accident.
Survivors thanked God for sparing their lives, as many could have suffered worse injuries or death. The bus remained stuck at the scene, blocking traffic until authorities could clear it.
Mubende Police spokesperson Martin Kalekezi confirmed the incident and stated that emergency responders were working to assist the injured. However, when our team visited Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, the situation remained chaotic, with medical personnel struggling to handle the influx of patients.
Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident, but preliminary findings point to mechanical failure due to the burst tire. Police have urged drivers to routinely inspect their vehicles to prevent similar tragedies.
The deceased have not yet been identified, and families are asked to report to Mubende Hospital for further information. Updates will follow as more details emerge.
