Pope Francis has died aged 88, the Vatican says. The first Latin American to lead the Roman Catholic Church, he died at 07:35 local time on Easter Monday.
Mourners are gathering in St Peter's Square, where there is a sense of shock and sadness, people are seen crying in the street on their way.
World leaders are paying tribute, with King Charles saying he "profoundly touched the lives of so many".
Francis's death comes a day after he appeared in St Peter's Square to wish "Happy Easter" to thousands of worshippers.
He was discharged from hospital on 23rd March after five weeks of treatment for an infection since 14th February.
His death sets in motion the centuries-old process of electing a new Pope and will be buried outside Vatican at Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome.
He became the pontiff in 2013 becoming the first non-European and the First from Americas.
