Two people were brutally murdered, and three houses were set ablaze in Bulambuli District on Monday night following a violent altercation over a romantic relationship. The victims, identified as Yefusa Massette, 37, and Godfrey Kabuto, 48, both residents of Busiango village, Buwabwala parish, Bwikhonge sub-county, lost their lives in the tragic incident.
According to Paulo Kimamati, the Bulambuli District NRM Chairperson and a neighbor, the violence erupted when Massette visited his girlfriend, Kabuto's daughter, at midnight. Mistaking Massette for a thief, Kabuto attacked him with a panga, killing him on the spot. Upon hearing the commotion, locals discovered Kabuto's body lying in a pool of blood and demanded that Massette exit the house. When he refused, the enraged mob poured petrol on the house and set it on fire. Massette attempted to flee but was lynched by the angry crowd.
The mob further torched Massette's house, kitchen, and another nearby property, destroying crops such as bananas and coffee, along with other valuables worth millions of shillings. Deputy Elgon Region Police Commander Damiano Katwisime confirmed that police responded to the scene and transported the bodies to Muyembe Health Center 4 for a post-mortem examination on Tuesday morning.
Katwisime strongly cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging citizens to report crimes to the nearest police station or local authorities. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
