A bitter family dispute over the paternity of a child has escalated in Kikooza Village, Mukono Municipality, involving Nalweyiso Bridget (22) and her mother, Babirye Babra (45). The conflict arose after Babirye allegedly claimed that she, not her daughter Bridget, gave birth to Bridget’s 2½-year-old child, Lule Latif. Babirye further complicated matters by giving the child to a man named Kamoga Ashraf, whom she claimed was the father.
The dispute reached a boiling point when Bridget reported her mother to the police, accusing her of unlawfully taking her child. Bridget, who has been struggling to care for her child, expressed her frustration and pain over her mother’s actions. She revealed that her mother had given the child to another man, despite Bridget’s insistence that she is the rightful mother.
"My mother has taken my child and given him to another man. She claims she gave birth to him, but that is not true. I am the mother, and I want my child back," said Bridget.
Bridget also accused her mother of changing the child’s birth records and fabricating a story to justify her actions. She provided documents from Mukono Government Hospital, which she claims prove her maternity. Bridget further alleged that her mother’s actions were motivated by a desire to gain financial support from the man she named as the father.
Babirye, however, defended her actions, claiming that she gave birth to the child and that Bridget is lying. She accused Bridget of being irresponsible and unable to care for the child. Babirye also alleged that Bridget had been involved with multiple men, complicating the paternity issue.
"I am the one who gave birth to this child. My daughter is not telling the truth. I took the child because she cannot take care of him," said Babirye
The dispute has divided the community, with some residents supporting Bridget and others siding with Babirye. Neighbors, including Mutalemwa Hadijja, Nabaggala Susan, Mutabazi Vincent, and Wandwasi Rogers, shared their perspectives on the matter. They revealed that Babirye had previously claimed to be pregnant and even changed the child’s birth records to support her story
"Babirye told us she was pregnant and even showed us a protruding belly. Later, she changed the child’s birth records and gave him to another man. We are confused about who the real mother is," said a neighbor.
Bridget has called on the police to intervene and help her regain custody of her child. She also appealed to the public for support, urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, Babirye remains in police custody as investigations continue.
The case has highlighted the complexities of family disputes and the emotional toll they take on all parties involved. As the investigation unfolds, both Bridget and Babirye await a resolution that will determine the future of the child at the center of this bitter feud.
