Mukono Leaders Condemn Brutal Murder of Money Lender, Urge Debt Reform
Following the gruesome killing of money lender Anita Mutesi Nalule by debtor Elvis Katabazi in Namuyenje village, Nakisunga Sub-county, Mukono district leaders have united in outrage while calling for systemic changes in informal lending practices. The 34-year-old victim was found stabbed to death near her Toyota Fielder (UBR 759V) after meeting Katabazi to inspect property collateral for an 18 million shilling loan.
Mukono NRM Chairperson Al Hajji Haruna Ssemakula revealed the victim was a party member as he condemned the attack, urging lenders to verify borrowers' credentials through formal channels. Gulu Ward Chairman Mohammad Wasswa emphasized the need for lenders to assess repayment capacity and implement security measures during transactions.
Local authorities pledged support for the bereaved family while warning against vigilante justice. Leaders across political divides advocated for:
Stricter borrower screening processes, Enhanced personal security for lenders, Timely debt repayment culture, Formalized collateral agreements
The murder has reignited debate about regulating Uganda's shadow banking sector, where violent disputes frequently erupt over unpaid debts. Police continue holding suspect Katabazi as investigations progress.
