The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has dominated the women’s council elections at sub-county and division levels in Mukono District, securing 17 of the 18 positions declared by the district returning officer.
The polls held peacefully and without any major incidents, underscored the ruling party’s strong showing among women leaders. An independent candidate claimed one seat, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) took one position.
Mukono District Returning Officer George William Eliau announced the results during a press briefing. He said elections were conducted in only five of the district’s 18 sub-counties. The NRM candidates took the bulk of the contested seats. The NUP won the women’s vice-chairperson position in Nama Sub-county, while an independent candidate secured the remaining seat.
Eliau added that the election of the Mukono District women’s council will take place next week. Only the newly elected women’s council chairpersons will form the electoral college and vote by secret ballot.
In Goma Division, the race for women’s council chairperson was contested between NRM’s Jolly Namutebi Ahumuza and independent candidate Patience Nyagoma. Namutebi prevailed with 20 votes to Nyagoma’s four, completing an NRM sweep of all positions contested in the division.
Speaking after the results, Namutebi thanked the women who elected her and pledged to prioritise their welfare without regard to political affiliation. “I will serve all women without discrimination and work to improve their welfare,” she said. She promised to focus on issues affecting women and ensure they benefit from available programmes and opportunities.
Nyagoma conceded defeat, saying the outcome reflected the will of the voters. She vowed to continue her advocacy, particularly educating women on environmental conservation. Nyagoma stressed that women have a critical role in promoting environmental sustainability within their communities.
The NRM Buganda women’s representative on the party’s National Executive Council Julie Nassuna and John Baptist Wamala the coordinator for Greater Mukono in the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), described the results as a demonstration of the confidence voters retain in President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM government. She urged the newly elected leaders to set aside political differences and serve all women without discrimination, focusing on improving their lives and welfare.
Women’s councils are expected to play a central role in mobilising women for government programmes, advocating for their interests, and supporting initiatives that raise household incomes and strengthen community welfare.
