Fatal Road Crash in Namisindwa Claims Life of Local Teacher

Namisindwa, Uganda– A tragic road accident on the Mbale-Lwakhakha highway has left one person dead after a speeding motorcycle collided with a pedestrian on Saturday morning, May 3, 2025. Â
The incident occurred this morning  in Munamba, Namisindwa district, when a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (Registration No. UMA 249AW) traveling from Lwakhakha towards Bubutu hit a pedestrian, killing him instantly. Â
The victim has been identified as Richard Wafula, 51, a teacher at Nemba Government-Aided Primary School and a resident of Butemulani Village, Munamba Town Board, Bubutu Sub-County, Namisindwa District. Â

According to Rich Addie, the Namisindwa District Police Commander (DPC), preliminary findings indicate that the motorcycle rider was speeding when he lost control and knocked down Wafula, who was walking along the roadside. Â
"The rider abandoned the motorcycle and fled the scene immediately after the accident," said DPC Addie. "We have launched a manhunt to identify and arrest him." Â
The body of the deceased has been taken to  Magale Health Centre IV  for a  post-mortem examination , while the motorcycle  has been  impounded at Lwakhakha Police Station  as part of the ongoing investigation. Â

The death of  Richard Wafula , a dedicated teacher, has sent shockwaves through the local community. Colleagues and residents described him as a  hardworking and passionate educator who contributed significantly to the education sector in Namisindwa. Â
"We have lost a committed teacher who served with diligence," said a fellow teacher from Nemba Primary School . "His sudden death is a big blow to the school and the entire district." Â
This latest accident has reignited concerns over reckless driver  and poor road safety  along the Mbale-Lwakhakha highway , a route frequently used by motorcycles and trucks. Â
Local leaders and traffic police have urged riders to observe speed limits  and  pedestrians to exercise caution when using the busy highway. Â
"We continue to witness avoidable accidents due to speeding and negligence," said DPC Addie. "We appeal to all road users to prioritize safety to prevent such tragedies." Â
Police are  conducting witness interviews to track down the fleeing rider. Once apprehended, he will face charges of causing death by reckless driving and fleeing the scene of an accident . Â
The deceased’s family has been notified, and arrangements for his burial are underway. Â
