Mukono Police are searching for Isa Olenge, also known as Ali Gandi, a resident of Nabusugwe in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality, who escaped from CPR Medical Center after being hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The suspect is accused of multiple crimes, including assault, property damage, and impersonation.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the suspect was arrested on September 28 during an operation targeting individuals involved in land grabbing and illegal evictions in Jinja Misidye and Nabusugwe. During the operation, police arrested several suspects, including Khata Paul and Katongole Alex, before apprehending Olenge, who attempted to flee and resisted arrest, leading to him being shot by officers.
Onyango revealed that Olenge faces multiple charges, including assault, property damage, and impersonation. Police are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.
Before his escape, Olenge spoke to Salt Media, claiming that he was framed by a man alleged to be a UPDF officer, Captain Richard Kawanguzi. He accused Kawanguzi of orchestrating his arrest and providing a list of names of individuals targeted for eviction in Mukono.
Olenge also claimed to have connections with various security personnel, which he said were being used against him. He expressed frustration over the charges he faces and called for a fair investigation.
At the hospital, Olenge was found with his family, including his wife, Harriet Nsangi, and their two children. Nsangi recounted the traumatic experience of seeing her husband shot and expressed fear for their safety, citing threats from individuals involved in the land dispute.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions and violence associated with land disputes in Mukono. Police have vowed to intensify efforts to apprehend Olenge and bring him to justice, while also addressing the broader issue of land grabbing in the area.
