Liverpool forward Diogo Jota dies in car crash

Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who died in a road traffic accident in Spain. The club will not make further comments and respects the privacy of the family, friends, teammates and staff during this difficult time. Porto is also in mourning over the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva. The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are deeply saddened by the loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who was also a youth player for Porto.


On behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to Diogo and Andre Silva’s families, Liverpool FC, and FC Penafiel.
The Portuguese Football Federation has requested a minute’s silence before our national team’s match against Spain in the women’s European Championship on Thursday.
Diogo and André’s loss is irreplaceable for Portuguese football, and we will honour their legacy every day.
Less than two weeks ago, Diogo Jota and his partner Rute Cardoso got married on June 22nd.

Here’s the full statement from the Guardia Civil confirming Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva’s deaths:
“The Lamborghini car left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking in the early hours of 00:30 BST in Cernadilla, Zamora.
“The car caught fire, and the two occupants were killed.”
When asked to confirm the identities, the Guardia Civil said: “The player and his brother, André Silva.”
Diogo Jota, a Portuguese footballer, and his brother André tragically died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, less than two weeks after their wedding on June 22, 2025. The Lamborghini, which left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another car, caught fire, resulting in the deaths of both occupants.
