UPDF Conducts Community Clean-Up Exercise in Nakawa, Bugoloobi Ahead of Tarehe Sita Celebrations

AKAWA, UGANDA — In a demonstration of civil-military cooperation, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on Saturday conducted a large-scale community cleaning exercise in Nakawa and Bugoloobi areas as part of activities leading to the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations.

The exercise, which commenced early in the morning, saw soldiers from the Directorate of Information and Security in Mbuya engage in cleaning, sensitisation, and public health activities across the neighbourhoods. The initiative aimed not only to improve sanitation but also to strengthen ties between the military and civilian populations.

Officers interacted with residents and local leaders, who expressed appreciation for the force’s continued contribution to community welfare. The event also drew participation from former Attorney General and NRM flag bearer, Hon. Fred Ruhindi, who joined the soldiers in the cleanliness drive.

A Tribute to the Liberation Struggle

Flagging off the exercise at 1:00 AM, Brigadier Abdul Nyeringa Rugumayo reminded the soldiers of the mission’s deeper purpose. “We are here not just to clean, but to remember and honour the freedom fighters who sacrificed for this nation,” he stated.

He urged the troops to uphold the values of discipline and service that have defined the UPDF since its inception, emphasising that community engagement remains central to the force’s identity.

Overcoming Challenges in Service

Soldiers endured high temperatures and poor hygienic conditions during the exercise, reflecting their commitment to “giving back to society.” The clean-up is among several pre-Tarehe Sita activities organised to commemorate the historic capture of Kabamba on February 6, which marked a turning point in the liberation struggle.

This year’s celebrations, typically held in February, were rescheduled due to the busy election calendar, allowing the force to dedicate time to community-centred activities ahead of the official anniversary events.

The UPDF’s ongoing civic engagement continues to reinforce its role beyond national defence, highlighting its commitment to national development and public well-being.
