In Hoima City, police arrested organisers and supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, who were preparing to hold a rally. The gathering was intended to welcome their Member of Parliament for Hoima West Constituency, Kato Ronald Rwahwire.
The group, led by the NUP's Vice President for the Western Region, Evelyn Katusabe, was intercepted at their party offices. Police authorities, under the command of SP Jimmy Tumwine, justified the arrests by stating the rally was illegal as the organisers lacked the required written permission.
Conversely, the nation recently celebrated its 63rd Independence Day at the Kololo Independence Grounds in a formal state function. The President presided over the event, which featured a ceremonial inspection of a guard of honour mounted by joint security forces. His speech focused on themes of economic growth, pledging to boost the economy and highlighting the potential of the oil sector.
He also reflected on the nation's history, remembering those lost in past conflicts while showcasing a former rebel as a symbol of reconciliation. The celebration emphasised industrial innovation, citing projects like a pharmaceutical factory by Dr Matthias Magoola and automotive engineering from Kira Motors, and concluded with the awarding of medals to various dignitaries.
