Tensions Rise in Kawempe North By-Election as NRM Backs Faridah Nambi

Kampala

The political atmosphere in Kawempe North has intensified as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) rallies behind its flag bearer, Faridah Nambi, ahead of the upcoming by-election. The by-election, scheduled for November 13, follows the tragic passing of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya last month.

NRM’s Campaign Strategy
NRM supporters have been actively campaigning for Faridah Nambi, holding rallies and engaging with voters in the constituency. Nambi emerged victorious in the party’s primaries, defeating seven other candidates, including Rosemary Nansubuga Seninde, a former advisor to President Museveni.

However, the campaign has not been without controversy. Hajati Hanifa Karadi, who had initially expressed interest in contesting as an independent candidate, has since withdrawn from the race and pledged her support for Nambi. This move has sparked mixed reactions among her supporters, with some expressing disappointment and others aligning with her decision.

Supporters Clash Over Allegiances
Tensions flared as supporters of Hajati Hanifa Karadi, led by Paulson Tinamasiko and others under the "Yellow Power" movement, voiced their dissatisfaction with the NRM’s dominance in the race. They accused the party of sidelining independent candidates and undermining fair competition.

Despite these challenges, Faridah Nambi remains confident of victory. She has promised to address the longstanding issues in Kawempe North, including poor infrastructure and inadequate service delivery, which she claims have left the constituency lagging behind other parts of Kampala.

Nomination and Election Dates
The Electoral Commission has set the nomination dates for candidates on October 26 and 27, with the by-election scheduled for November 13. The race is expected to be highly competitive, with several candidates vying to fill the vacant seat.

Conclusion
As the campaign for the Kawempe North by-election gains momentum, the NRM’s efforts to consolidate support behind Faridah Nambi have drawn both praise and criticism. With the election just weeks away, all eyes are on Kawempe North as voters prepare to choose their next representative in Parliament.
