Robert Kyagulanyi reports hour-long police blockade en route to Kabarole rally
KABAROLE, Uganda – National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has reported that his campaign convoy has been held by police for over an hour on the road to his scheduled rally venue in Kabarole District.
In a statement posted on social media, the presidential candidate said his team is trapped “in the middle of the road to Kabarole,” despite the venue being less than ten minutes away. He accused police of deliberately directing his convoy to take alternative rural routes that would add approximately two hours to their travel time.
“The criminal regime police prefer us to use alternative rural routes, which may take us two hours to the venue,” Kyagulanyi stated. “Previously, we encountered numerous blockades on our journey to Bunyangabu District, which made it difficult for us to reach our people on time.”
The incident is the latest in a series of disruptions reported by the opposition leader’s campaign team, which has repeatedly accused security forces of using logistical obstructions to delay or derail scheduled rallies.
With official campaign hours nearing their end for the day, Kyagulanyi expressed urgency, stating, “We remain entrapped in the middle of the road to Kabarole as campaign time nears expiry.”
Police authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the specific blockade. The Electoral Commission’s campaign guidelines require all public meetings to conclude by a stipulated evening hour, raising concerns that the delay may prevent the rally from taking place as planned.
The standoff highlights ongoing tensions between opposition candidates and security agencies over campaign access and mobility, an issue that has marked several weeks of the 2026 election cycle.
