The National Unity Platform (NUP) has condemned what it described as a violent start to its campaign trail to Bundibugyo and Ntoroko districts, accusing masked Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers of whipping peaceful supporters who had lined the streets to greet the convoy.
In a post on its official social media handle, the opposition party stated: “Our journey to Bundibugyo and Ntoroko has kicked off with brutality on the streets. Masked UPDF soldiers have whipped some of our peaceful supporters who had staged on the sidelines of the streets to wave at us!”
The incident marks another escalation in the ongoing tension between opposition campaign teams and state security forces ahead of the 2026 general elections. NUP has repeatedly accused security agencies of using excessive force, intimidation, and arbitrary restrictions to disrupt its mobilisation efforts.

There has been no immediate comment from the UPDF or police regarding the allegations.
The opposition party’s campaign in the Rwenzori sub-region has been marked by logistical challenges and alleged obstruction, including recent delays and blockades reported in Kabarole and Fort Portal.
Human rights organisations and diplomatic observers have repeatedly raised concerns over the shrinking of civic and political space in Uganda, citing incidents of violence, arbitrary arrests, and restrictions on opposition gatherings.
The latest allegation is likely to intensify calls for impartial security oversight and adherence to electoral guidelines that guarantee freedom of assembly and movement for all candidates.
