Mpigi, Uganda – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary primaries in Mpigi District concluded late last night with mixed reactions as incumbent MPs retained their seats while losing candidates alleged electoral malpractices.
Presided over by Henry Bbuye (NRM Mpigi Electoral Commission head), the results were declared at 7:00 PM after tense hours of vote tallying:
In Mawokota North, Amelia Kyambadde, the incumbent, secured 26,596 votes, while Sam Akol received only 212 votes. Kyambadde was greeted with cheers from supporters as the NRM flag was raised in support of the incumbent.
Suzan Nakawuki Nsambu won unopposed in Mawokota South after rivals withdrew.
Harriet Mbabazzi (Incumbent), the MP for Mpigi District, won all 9 sub-counties with 25,689 votes.
Controversies have emerged. Erina Nakimera, a third-place woman MP aspirant, rejected the results, alleging irregularities. NRM leaders are investigating her claims. Additionally, some voters in Kiringente Sub-County protested, claiming “ghost voting” occurred.
Sulaiman Kaweesi, the NRM MP for Mbarara, called for unity among winners and losers.
He urged them to focus on strengthening the NRM party ahead of the 2026 elections.
