NRM Primaries: Aspirants Rush to Submit Nominations Amidst Strict Guidelines

Kampala – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is witnessing a surge in aspirants submitting nomination forms for various leadership positions, including the party chairmanship and flagbearer for the 2026 presidential elections. However, the process has not been without controversy, as some hopefuls faced unexpected hurdles.

Several aspiring candidates, including Julius Tumuhibise and Brighton Kiwanuka, were initially blocked from submitting their forms after failing to pay the required UGX 20 million nomination fee. The delay occurred after the NRM electoral commission, led by Dr. Tanga Odoi, implemented strict verification measures, including cross-checking payments with a special presidential list.

The NRM electoral chief explained that the current phase only allows the collection of nomination forms, with actual submissions scheduled during the upcoming delegates' conference. "Forms aren't being submitted now. Those vying for chairmanship should prepare for the conference, where they'll present their documents," Odoi stated.

Dr. Odoi also announced the commencement of voter verification exercises in Sembabule District starting tomorrow, emphasising the need for proper mobilisation of party members ahead of the internal elections.

The NRM electoral commission unveiled a tight campaign schedule:
- Campaign period: July 1-14, 2025
- Election date: July 16, 2025

This applies to parliamentary and district chairperson positions, with Dr. Odoi warning all aspirants to strictly adhere to the official campaign timeline.

CEC Members Get Special Consideration
Meanwhile, members of the powerful Central Executive Committee (CEC) – including Minister Chris Baryomunsi and Kiwanda Subi – are proceeding with their nominations. Jennifer Kanyera, vying for the CEC publicity position, successfully submitted her forms and received the party flag, symbolising official candidacy.

The nomination process has sparked vigorous activity at NRM offices nationwide, with successful aspirants immediately embarking on grassroots mobilisation. Those securing flags are required to present five supporters from each village in their constituencies.
