Mpigi District Officials Remanded Over Job Bribery Scandal

The Mpigi Chief Magistrates Court has remanded three senior district officials following their arrest on charges of soliciting bribes from job seekers. The accused include

Three individuals are listed: Mr. Ssejjemba Martine, Mr. Kirumira Fredrick, and Ms. Nakamoga Sarah.
The trio faces charges of "demanding money by menaces" after allegedly operating an elaborate job-selling scheme where applicants were forced to pay between UGX 50,000 and 15 million to secure government positions.

Their arrest came after President Museveni, during his Parish Development Model (PDM) monitoring tour in Greater Mpigi on June 17, 2025, received multiple complaints about corruption in the district's recruitment process. The President immediately ordered Brig. Gen. Henry Isoke, Head of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, to investigate and apprehend those involved.

The suspects were denied bail and remanded until July 8, 2025, as investigations continue. Prosecutors allege that the Mpigi District Service Commission systematically extorted money from desperate job seekers, turning public employment into a pay-to-play scheme.

The scandal has sparked outrage among residents, with many victims coming forward to testify about their experiences. Some applicants reported being asked for bribes as high as UGX 15 million for lucrative positions, while lower-ranking jobs were sold for UGX 50,000 to 500,000.

Brig. Gen. Isoke warned that more arrests could follow as the investigation expands. "This is just the beginning. We will clean up Mpigi and other districts where such corruption thrives," he stated.

The case has raised serious concerns about corruption in local government recruitment, particularly in districts where unemployment is high and government jobs are highly sought after.
