KAMPALA – In a sweeping review of electoral disputes, Uganda's presidential election tribunal has concluded hearings for 180 cases, delivering rulings that have reshaped the political landscape by unseating several ministers and upholding numerous parliamentary victories. The decisions mark a significant moment in the nation's electoral accountability process.
Among the most notable outcomes, the tribunal confirmed the defeat of three ministers in their respective parliamentary races. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, State Minister for Primary Health Care, lost her bid for Moyo District's woman MP seat to Bernadette Chandia. Fredrick Gume, State Minister for Cooperatives, was ousted by George Patrick Kasajja in Kaliro's Bulamogi North West constituency. At the same time, Victoria Businge, State Minister for Local Government, fell to Annet Kirungi in Kabarole District. The newly confirmed Bulamogi MP-elect Kasajja called for unity among constituents, pledging to prioritise development initiatives in the area.
The tribunal, led by NRM legal chief Enock Barata, also upheld Moses Angundru's victory over Eric Sabiti in Terego West amidst allegations of electoral irregularities. In a separate high-profile case, the panel dismissed academic fraud claims against Kampala Lord Mayor-elect Mahad Kaweesa, rejecting challenges from opponents Thaddeus Musoke and Joseph Mayanja.
With these rulings concluded, the tribunal now turns its attention to pending cases at other levels of government. Proceedings for district chairperson petitions must be completed by June 6, followed by mayoral disputes, which have a June 10 deadline. Numerous councillor petitions remain ongoing, including Nobert Twizire's challenge in Makindye West and several mayoral contests in Kira, Mbarara and Kasese municipalities.
