NRM acknowledges shortcomings in the previous election cycle
With less than four Months to the 2026 general elections, political parties are intensifying their strategies to secure leadership positions.
The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has concluded a major national retreat, expressing unwavering confidence in securing a landslide victory. Our report details the party's ambitious targets and the internal preparations underway.
Â
The National Resistance Movement has declared that it will not take the 2026 elections lightly. Instead, the party plans to approach them with immense force, aiming to win with a staggering 85 per cent of the vote. Furthermore, the party aims to secure over 85 per cent of the parliamentary seats.
Â
This comes after President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni won the 2021 election against National Unity Platform's Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu with approximately 58 per cent of the vote.
Â
The NRM now acknowledges shortcomings in the previous election cycle, particularly in the Buganda and Busoga regions, and is determined to win them back convincingly.
Â
The sense of urgency is palpable, with party leaders fanning out across the country to launch a mobilisation drive. The goal is to reassure Ugandans that the NRM has all the solutions to lead the nation for another five-year term.
Â
At this time, the Electoral Commission is in its final preparations to receive nominations for presidential candidates. Just yesterday, 11 aspiring politicians picked nomination forms from the commission.
Â
Every political party and individual aspiring for the presidency is currently strategizing on how to win the upcoming polls.
Â
Today, the NRM party summoned its supporters from across the country to brainstorm and pool ideas on how to achieve a resounding victory.
Â
This meeting was chaired by the party's National Treasurer, Rosemary Nansubuga Sseninde.
Â
"Even though we won the last election with 58 percent,we are not going to take the 2026 polls for granted. We are coming with full force to win with 85 percent."
Â
Sseninde, alongside the party's Treasurer Barbara Nekesa oundo , noted that the NRM performed poorly in the Buganda and Busoga regions, particularly at the parliamentary level in the last election.
Â
The party claims it has devised a strategy to win back the hearts of the people in these regions and is optimistic about recapturing them.
Â
"We have done what is necessary to bring back the support in these areas and we are confident we will win them back."
Â
Some NRM leaders from various regions, led by , Zepha Muhangi, praised the retreat. They want their party to reconcile with members who lost in the recent party primaries to prevent any discontent that could cost the party support.
Â
Â
This development comes a day after the party received expression of interest forms from 99 districts, which have been handed to the Electoral Commission to nominate President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as its flag bearer.
Â
In a related effort to bolster this mission, the NRM, through its youth wing "Youth for Museveni" led by Ms. Fiona Nakku, has convened a meeting for its youth leaders to strategize across Uganda.
Â
In this meeting, the youth vowed to ensure the NRM secures 13 million votes in the 2026 elections. They also stated that the opposition will find no room for success.
Â
"What happened in the past happened. But now, I know we have engaged the youth to mobilize and secure 13 million votes for NRM."
Â
However,it's not all smooth sailing. Some members who contested in various positions in the Kawempe Division on the party ticket have withdrawn from the primaries, citing allegations of unfairness and lack of transparency.
Â
They are led by Nambi Fatima, who aspired for the South Division parliamentary seat in Kawempe. Alongside other councilors, they accuse the party of financially backing candidates who are behind the confusion, claiming the party favors the incumbent MP.
