I ask my competitors to stop being greedy
KAMPALA, UGANDA. Captain George Mike Mukula secured a significant nomination today as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party's candidate for Vice National Chairman of the Eastern Region, setting the stage for his bid to join the powerful Central Executive Committee (CEC).Â
Â
The announcement, made at the NRM headquarters on Plot 10 Kyadondo Road in Kampala, was followed by an address to journalists where Mukula, a seasoned politician and former State Minister for Health, immediately took aim at his rivals within the party.
Â
He specifically called on competitors vying for multiple positions to curb their "greed," arguing that such ambitions were detrimental to the party's cohesion and democratic process.
Â
Emerging from the nomination process, a confident Mukula stood before the press at the party's nerve centre. He framed his nomination as a testament to his long-standing service and commitment to the NRM in the Eastern Region, where he previously served as Soroti Municipality MP and held various ministerial roles.
Â
His primary message, however, focused sharply on the conduct of fellow aspirants. "I ask my competitors to stop being greedy," Mukula declared, directly referencing individuals who have reportedly sought nominations for more than one influential position simultaneously.Â
Â
He implied that this practice of contesting multiple top-tier seats potentially including parliamentary tickets, district chairmanships, and CEC slots – smacked of self-interest and undermined fair competition.Â
Â
"They have contested in more than one political position," he stated, suggesting this demonstrated an excessive hunger for power that could fragment the party's support base and hinder effective representation for the region.
Â
Mukula's nomination positions him as a leading contender in the upcoming elections for the Eastern Region's Vice National Chairman slot.Â
Â
This position is crucial as it automatically grants the holder membership in the NRM's apex decision-making body, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), chaired by President Yoweri Museveni. The CEC wields significant influence over party policy, strategy, and candidate selection for national elections. His public admonishment of rivals seeking multiple positions highlights internal party dynamics and the intense competition surrounding these influential regional and national roles. Mukula's call for competitors to focus their ambitions appears to be both a campaign strategy positioning him as a dedicated regional representative and a commentary on what he perceives as problematic behaviour within the NRM's electoral landscape.Â
Â
The stage is now set for a competitive race within the NRM Eastern Region structures, with Mukula's critique of "greed" likely to resonate and spark debate among party delegates.
