Kikuube, Uganda – The Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi, has urged women in the Bunyoro sub-region to actively participate in the Government’s GROW (Generating Rural Opportunities for Women) Programme, aimed at empowering rural women to overcome poverty through financial inclusion and cooperative savings. Â
The Minister appealed during her visit to Kisambo Town Council in Kikuube District, where she engaged with members of the "Tuli Hamwe Savings and Cooperative Group", a local women’s savings initiative. Â
Minister Amongi emphasised that the GRO Programme is designed to provide women with financial resources, training, and market access to boost their economic productivity. Â
Samuel Muganzi, Manager of the Tuli Hamwe Savings Group, highlighted the struggles faced by women farmers in the region, including: Â
Muganzi noted that these challenges have made it difficult for women to sustain their families despite their hard work. Â

The Minister announced that under the first cycle of the GRO Programme, each beneficiary will receive UGX 400,000 as startup capital. Â
"We want to see how effectively these funds are utilised before scaling up support. This is not a handout but an investment in your future," Amongi stressed. Â

The Minister urged women to form stronger cooperatives and leverage government programmes to break free from poverty. She also warned against mismanagement of funds, emphasizing accountability. Â

The GRO Programme will be rolled out in phases, with Kikuube District among the first beneficiaries. The government plans to monitor progress before expanding to other regions. Â
