Mao Retains DP Presidency Amid Controversial Election
Norbert Mao has been re-elected as Democratic Party president for another five-year term after securing 969 votes in an election marred by controversy at the party's delegates conference. His challenger Dr. Lulume Bayiga, garnered 339 votes, while Secretary General Gerald Siranda retained his position with 870 votes against Ismail Kirya's 312. Â
DP electoral commission chair Kennedy Mutenyo declared the results amid tight security at the contested venue, asserting the process's legitimacy despite visible tensions. The announcement sparked immediate backlash, with deputy president Fred Mukasa Mbidde accusing certain leaders of attempting to sabotage the elections and specifically calling out Siranda for alleged interference. Â
Mao acknowledged the divisions in his victory speech, pledging to unite the party and restore organisational discipline. The contentious election, which required a heavy security presence to maintain order, exposes deepening fractures within Uganda's oldest opposition party as it prepares for the 2026 general elections.
