Kalyesubula Benjamin announces candidacy for Uganda’s 2026 presidential election.
KAMPALA, UGANDA – July 30, 2025 – Kalyesubula Benjamin, a prominent city businessman based in Bakuli, Lubaga Division, Kampala, has officially announced his intention to contest the presidency of Uganda in the forthcoming 2026 general elections.
The car dealer, known for his operations within the bustling Bakuli market area, declared his ambition today, positioning himself as an independent candidate focused on critical national issues.
Mr. Kalyesubula brings a background intertwined with recent political involvement. He revealed that he previously served as the spokesperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP) party in Nakaseke District. However, his political journey within NUP took a decisive turn when he expressed his presidential aspirations. According to Kalyesubula, this ambition triggered significant opposition from NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine). He alleges that Kyagulanyi "started fighting him" following the declaration of his presidential interest.
Faced with this alleged internal conflict, Kalyesubula made the consequential decision to resign from the NUP.
He stated his departure was a direct result of the pressure he faced within the party after declaring his presidential bid. Choosing to forge his own path, he is now launching his campaign as an independent candidate, bypassing the established party structures.
Central to Kalyesubula's nascent presidential campaign is a three-pronged policy focus aimed at addressing fundamental challenges within Uganda.
He has explicitly stated that his primary objectives, should he be elected, are to significantly boost the education sector, revolutionize agricultural productivity and support for farmers, and tackle the pervasive issue of youth unemployment by creating sustainable employment opportunities.
His platform appears to target core socio-economic concerns affecting a large segment of the Ugandan population, particularly the youth.
The declaration by the Kampala-based businessman injects a new dynamic into the evolving landscape of the 2026 presidential race. As an independent candidate emerging from a business background and citing a contentious exit from a major opposition party, Kalyesubula aims to present himself as an alternative voice focused on practical solutions for education, agriculture, and youth empowerment.
His ability to mobilize support outside traditional party frameworks will be a key factor to watch as the campaign season progresses. He joins a growing list of individuals seeking Uganda's highest office.
