Government Announces Special Fishermen Grant,

Busia District – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s Treasurer, Ambassador Abbassadar Babura Nekese Oundo, has announced that the government is setting aside a special grant aimed at improving the livelihoods of fishermen across Uganda.

The announcement was made during NRM parish mobilisation campaigns in Busime Sub-county, Busia District. Ambassador Oundo stated that the fund is designed to help fishermen acquire proper fishing gear, including nets and boats, to make their work more manageable and profitable.

“This fund will help the fishermen to acquire good fishing gear, which will make their work admirable and is a way of helping them not practice bad fishing methods, like fishing out premature fish, which the government discourages,” she told the gathered locals.

She also advised communities against over-reliance on a single trade, using the example of Busoga’s diversification into sugarcane farming. “Not all people should go fishing as a business but rather have some other side incomes for their families,” she noted, promoting economic resilience.

The event quickly shifted into a fervent campaign rally, with Hon. Babura, a former Busia Woman MP, Minister, and Ambassador, urging voters to support the NRM. She dismissed the appeal of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in the area, framing the upcoming election as a choice for proven service delivery.

“People are voting for service delivery this time round,” she asserted. “I do not expect locals to vote for people whose leaders will not make it to State House rather than the NRM leaders whose leader, [President] Museveni, has all the clear signs that he is returning to State House.”

Linking the district’s identity to political choice, she remarked, “People coming from the East, mostly Busia, are said to be the wise people. Therefore, there is no wise person who can vote for NUP, which has done nothing and leaves the mighty NRM party, which has made fundamental achievements in Busia and the country at large.”

The Ambassador personalised her appeal, reminding constituents of her long-standing connection to the area despite her national appointments. “I have never stopped coming back home to Busia, because home is home… I cannot leave my people being lied to by NUP that it will bring development,” she stated, assuring them that only the NRM could deliver progress.

Her message resonated with some in the audience, with a group of older women reportedly shouting in praise, expressing regret for not voting her back into Parliament and wishing for her return.

The event in Busime is part of the NRM’s ongoing grassroots mobilization campaigns across the country ahead of the general elections.
