Final Day of Nominations for LC5 and Councillor Positions in Kampala

Nomination process for Local Council Five and directly elected councillor positions in Uganda concludes today.

Kampala, Uganda – Today marks the final day of the nomination process for Local Council Five (LC5) and directly elected councillor positions across Uganda. Aspiring candidates, including those vying for District Chairpersons and Councillors, have been presenting themselves at electoral offices over the past three days, as per the Electoral Commission’s schedule.

The nomination exercise, which began on Tuesday, concludes today, with several high-profile candidates submitting their papers. Among them is NRM’s Kizito Moses Nsubuga, who was nominated as the party’s flag bearer for Lord Mayor of Kampala. His nomination was completed at the Electoral Commission offices in Mbale at exactly 11:00 AM.

Mr. Rashid Hasakya, the Returning Officer for Kampala District, oversaw the nominations. After completing his own nomination, Nsubuga addressed the press, outlining his vision for Kampala.

Also nominated today was Hajj Ibrahim Kasozi Biribawa of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), who submitted his nomination papers earlier this morning. He shared his plans for Kampala if elected as Lord Mayor.

Kasozi expressed confidence in his ability to bring positive change and urged voters to support his vision for a better Kampala.

The Electoral Commission also nominated councillors aspiring to serve on the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) council. Many of these candidates are familiar faces in city politics.

Some of the nominated councillors are also aspiring Members of Parliament who were denied party tickets for parliamentary seats. They have opted to run for councillor positions instead, citing frustration with their parties’ nomination processes, which they claim favoured wealthy candidates or relatives of party officials over grassroots representatives.

This has led to concerns about the potential for independent bids if aspirants feel sidelined by their parties.
