District chairperson steps down from NRM elections after clash with party leaders, supporters left in shock

On this day, members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) were preparing to elect flag bearers for the 2026 elections at the district chairperson level, including division mayors and sub-county chairpersons.

However, NRM members in Masaka were left in shock when the party’s chairperson for Kalagala village in Nnyendo-Mukungwe Division, Ntale Godfrey, withdrew from the race following disagreements during the vetting process for the division mayoral candidacy. He accused party leaders of sidelining him, which led to chaos among his supporters.
Ntale stated that he could no longer remain in a race where he sees irregularities, especially when senior party members engage in actions that could even cost people their lives. He has since decided to step aside.
He also urged party members to remain united to strengthen the party and support President Museveni’s leadership so he can win the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, some of his supporters, led by Jjuuko John (youth leader), expressed dissatisfaction with Ntale’s decision to withdraw, saying they had confidence in his ability to lead. They accused some party members of dishonesty and lack of transparency, which they claim is damaging the party’s credibility.
Others are seen as hesitant, saying they will not support a candidate imposed by party elites, arguing that such a person lacks grassroots support and is only being fronted for selfish interests.
The elections for chairpersons and division mayors will take place this Thursday . In this race, Ntale Godfrey was competing against another party member, Nakiyingi Justine, but it now appears he has withdrawn completely.
