The election of members to the Busia Municipal Executive Committee remains at a standstill after councillors rejected Mayor Sadik Amin Agele's proposed appointments.
Mayor Agele has maintained that he will not nominate a different team to serve on the executive committee, despite resistance from councillors.
The councillors argue that some of the nominees do not meet the required qualifications. They have specifically opposed the appointment of Deputy Mayor Juma Odero, Susan Wandera as Secretary for Production, Bosco Ochunju as Secretary for Finance, and Bashir Wanyama Lolo as Secretary for Works.
Councillors also questioned Bosco Ochunju's eligibility, citing concerns over his employment status, while noting that Juma Odero is employed at Marachi Primary School. However, the issue remains contentious, as councillors are generally permitted to hold other jobs alongside their public responsibilities.
The disagreement has also drawn in the Speaker of the Busia Municipal Council, Julius Emoit. Mayor Agele has accused the Speaker of frustrating the process and delaying the formation of the executive committee.
It remains unclear when the councillors will reconvene to approve the executive committee, a move considered necessary for the smooth running of municipal business.
