Chaos, Vote Manipulation in NRM Primaries

NRM Primaries in Mukono Marred by Controversy and Alleged Irregularities

MUKONO – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for the 2026 elections took a contentious turn in Mukono Central Division, with disputes erupting over the credibility of the voting process at a community centre serving as the main polling station.

Steven Nakabale, the presiding electoral officer, commenced the exercise by declaring guidelines alongside polling assistants. However, confusion quickly set in as some candidates, including Eddie Kabugo (industrialist), Jonathan Kabugo (Goma), and Steven Mufuna, raised objections to the process. They accused the party of failing to ensure a fair contest, leading many residents to lose confidence in the exercise.

Umar Ssebuyungo, Dickson Mutibwa Nama (Mukono Central Division NRM chairperson), and Rajab Sentongo Kasawo acknowledged voter frustration but insisted they had done everything possible to ensure transparency. They blamed some of the irregularities on "rogue electoral assistants" who allegedly mishandled the voting process.

John Bosco Isabirye, a defeated candidate in Nama Sub-County, condemned the irregularities, vowing to return as an independent. "What happened today was a sham. The registrars and party officials deliberately sabotaged the process," he declared. Other disgruntled members threatened to abandon the NRM altogether, warning that the party risks losing support if it fails to address grievances.
