Baryomunsi Defends Bid for NRM Western Region Vice Chairmanship Amid Concerns of Overload

KAMPALA, UGANDA – July 29, 2025 – Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, has defended his decision to contest for the position of National Resistance Movement (NRM) Vice Chairperson for the Western Region. This move comes despite public concerns that his current extensive leadership roles could hinder his effectiveness.

Baryomunsi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kinkizi East, is widely regarded as an "overloaded" minister with immense responsibilities. A section of the public has suggested that he should be relieved of some state duties to ensure he can perform diligently. However, Baryomunsi, who has previously served as Minister of Health and Minister of Lands, insists he is still the right person for this additional responsibility.

Addressing a press conference to garner support for his candidature, Baryomunsi referred his critics to President Yoweri Museveni, who simultaneously holds the positions of NRM Chairperson, Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, and Head of State.

Responding to queries about not holding regional meetings as a chairperson, Baryomunsi clarified that organizing such meetings is not part of his mandate. He stated that his role has been to conduct regular regional visits. The minister also emphasized that holding this position does not offer any financial gains, but is purely a service.

Baryomunsi highlighted some achievements, citing the Central Executive Committee's approval of one billion shillings for the road fund as an example.

Speaking at the same briefing, Lydia Wanyoto, who is contesting for the NRM Women's League, boasted of being a "replica" of President Museveni, having served in various party political capacities, including contesting and losing in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, the NRM Chairperson for the Buganda region has cautioned party members to desist from "mortgaging" the party to individuals with selfish interests, which could divert the NRM's core roles.
