President Museveni to Break Ground for State-of-the-Art Aga Khan Hospital

Construction of the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nakawa, Uganda, to begin with a groundbreaking ceremony led by President Museveni. The hospital aims to provide specialized medical care within Uganda.

Nakawa, Kampala, Uganda – The first phase of construction for the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nakawa will officially commence on Thursday, with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni presiding over the groundbreaking ceremony. The hospital, one of the largest and most advanced medical facilities in Uganda, aims to reduce the need for Ugandans—including diplomats—to seek specialised medical treatment abroad.

The hospital, being developed in partnership with the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, will offer a range of complex medical services, including heart surgery, early-stage cancer treatment, kidney transplants, and bone marrow transplants.

Dr. Dianah Sewanyana, from Aga Khan University Hospital in Uganda, disclosed that the management is already collaborating with Mulago National Referral Hospital to integrate advanced medical services and improve healthcare delivery in Uganda.

Dr. Joseph Mwizera, who also participated in the tour, praised the Aga Khan Foundation for extending its services to Uganda and highlighted the positive impact the project will have on the education and health sectors.

Karim Sayani, the Foundation’s Manager in Uganda, pledged to complete the construction within the agreed timeframe.

During a guided tour, journalists were shown facilities that will offer specialised services such as brain surgery, kidney screening, and advanced laboratory testing. By press time, patients had already begun visiting the facility for preliminary services.

The project will also include an exchange program that will bring back Ugandan doctors currently working at the Aga Khan University overseas, further enhancing local expertise and knowledge transfer.
