Mental health issues are increasingly affecting Ugandans, with 30% of the population now suffering from mental health disorders, according to Dr. Juliet Naku, the Director of Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital. Dr. Naku revealed these statistics during the launch of a mental health awareness campaign led by the Queen of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, at Bulange Mengo.
The campaign, aimed at combating mental health stigma and promoting awareness, was attended by officials from the Buganda Kingdom, including Health Minister Cotrida Nakate, and other stakeholders. The initiative, dubbed Queen’s Ball 2025, seeks to raise funds and awareness to support individuals struggling with mental health issues.
Dr. Naku highlighted the misuse of drugs and alcohol as a major contributor to mental health problems. She urged the public to avoid substance abuse and seek professional help when experiencing mental health challenges.
Health Minister Cotrida Nakate commended the Buganda Kingdom for its efforts in promoting mental health awareness. She emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing mental health challenges and reducing stigma.
Queen Sylvia Nagginda, who spearheaded the campaign, announced that the Queen’s Ball 2025 will be held on May 2, 2025. The event will bring together individuals from across Uganda and beyond to raise funds for mental health education, awareness, and treatment.
The Queen called on Ugandans to be vigilant and supportive of friends, family, and community members experiencing mental health challenges. She emphasized the importance of seeking professional help and reducing stigma around mental health issues.
The campaign aims to raise awareness about mental health, provide education on prevention and treatment, and support individuals affected by mental health disorders. Funds raised will be used to expand mental health services, train healthcare workers, and support community-based initiatives.
