Hoima City Leads in HIV Prevalence Among Government-Designated Cities

Hoima, Uganda – Hoima City has recorded the highest HIV prevalence rate among the 11 cities gazetted by the government in 2011, according to a new report by the Uganda AIDS Commission.

 Alarming Statistics
Recent findings reveal that 9.6% of Hoima’s population is living with HIV—the highest rate among Uganda’s designated cities. The surge is attributed to increased migration, high-risk labor activities (particularly in the oil sector), and commercial sex work in the area.

 Oil Boom and Rising Infections
Local officials link the spike to the influx of workers in Hoima’s oil industry, with many engaging in risky sexual behaviors due to disposable income and limited awareness. Bars, hotels, and entertainment spots have become hotspots for transmission.

Dr. Susan Kigonza, Hoima’s Disease Control Officer, noted:
"Mobility and temporary settlements in labor camps create an environment where people engage in unprotected sex, fueling infections."

 Government Response
Dr. Zephaniah Karyabakoba, Director of the Uganda AIDS Commission, acknowledged the challenges but assured the public of intensified interventions, including:
- Expanded HIV testing and treatment programs
- Increased public awareness campaigns
- Plans to boost antiretroviral (ARV) drug availability

"While current drug stocks are limited, we are working to ensure wider access to treatment," he said.

 National HIV Figures
Uganda currently has 1.4 million people living with HIV, representing 1.5% of the population. However, localized epidemics, like in Hoima, remain a major concern.

As Uganda strives to meet its 95-95-95 HIV targets, addressing hotspots like Hoima will be critical in curbing new infections.
