Teachers Union (UPHTU) Declare Not Return to Teaching Until Salary Increase

"Humanities teachers under the Uganda Professional Humanities Teachers Union (UPHTU) have declared they will not return to teaching until the government increases their salaries to match those of their Science counterparts.
The teachers made this stand during a press briefing at  Makerere University, stating that their current salary is insufficient and fails to reflect their qualifications.

They revealed that despite waiting for three years for a promised government salary enhancement, nothing has materialised. Meanwhile, they noted, the government significantly increased salaries for Science teachers three years ago.

Teacher Rogers Bulegeya further accused some government officials of intimidation, threatening them with dismissal if they persisted in pushing for their demands.

Bulegeya warned these officials that such threats are unconstitutional and demonstrate malice.

The teachers highlighted the stark pay disparity: science degree holders receive between UGX 4.5 million and UGX 4 million monthly, while arts and humanities teachers with equivalent degrees earn only UGX 1.2 million to UGX 700,000.
