The arts government teachers have vowed not to call off their demonstration despite threats from the RDC to resume work. The demonstration kicked off on the 6th of this month where over 10,000 arts teacher have laid down their tools demanding government to increase their salary enhancements country wide.
The teachers under their umbrella organization Uganda professional humanities teachers union are demanding government to increase salaries for different teacher’s salary structures. The diploma teachers be increased from 600,000 to 2.2 million shillings while degree holders should be increased from 800,000 to 4M.These also demand the salaries of head teachers to be increased from 2.2 million shillings to 6 million shillings.
Speaking to salt media at the LDC at Makerere the association Kampala district coordinator Buregeya Rogers Said that the existing salary structure has left arts teachers under estimated as these cannot afford the basic needs.
Buregeya insists that government had pledged to provide 129 billion shillings during the drafting of last year’s budget frame work paper which was never disbursed up to taday .
In total government is suppose to disburse 688 billion shillings if the new salary structures were to be implemented.
The teachers still claim that they have been receiving threats from RDCs to resume work but this has been in vein.Buregeya further say they have followed all the procedure outlined in the public service standing order which include writing to the public service permanent secretary Catherine Biryakwate and permanent secretary minister of education Dr.Kedrace Turyagenda .
Government increased the salary enhancements for science teachers in 2022 and pledged to increase the arts salaries in a phased manner.
While addressing parliamentary education committee last year, the minister for higher education John Chrizestorm Muyingo confirmed this.
