Students and members of Rwandan student associations from universities across Uganda gathered at Bugema University for the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The day began with a symbolic memorial walk around the Bugema University campus, a procession aimed at honouring the memory of the more than one million lives lost during the genocide.
Students moved quietly through the campus, carrying candles and placards bearing messages of unity in remembrance of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

In attendance was His Excellency Colonel Joseph Rutabana, the Rwandan High Commissioner to Uganda, who delivered a keynote address. He urged the youth to remain vigilant and to reject divisive ideologies that fueled the genocide.
He noted that Rwanda has since moved beyond the dark days of the genocide, embracing reconciliation, resilience, and rebuilding as the foundation for the nation’s continued growth.
A memorial lecture followed, where scholars and genocide survivors shared reflections on Rwanda’s journey from tragedy to recovery.
Students were encouraged to be ambassadors of peace and to carry forward the lessons of Kwibuka to future generations.
