President Yoweri Museveni has officially commissioned the groundbreaking for Bunyoro University, a significant step in advancing education in Uganda. The ceremony took place in Kikuube District, marking the beginning of the construction of the first public university in the Bunyoro region.
President Museveni emphasized that the establishment of Bunyoro University is part of the government's broader plan to promote education across the country. He urged the people of Bunyoro to support and collaborate with the government to ensure the success of this initiative.
The university will be built on a 100-acre piece of land generously donated by Professor Dr. Henry Wamani. Dr. Wamani explained that he offered the land to address the lack of higher education institutions in the region, which has historically limited access to university education for many residents.
Local leaders, Members of Parliament, and community members expressed their joy and gratitude for the project, noting that it will bring significant development to the area. Andrew Byakutaga, the Prime Minister of Bunyoro Kingdom, highlighted that the establishment of the university will address the educational gap in the region, where only 0.8% of the population has access to university education.
The donated land, spanning approximately 100 acres, will host a university with three campuses located in Kakumiro, Kiryandongo, and Kagadi. These campuses aim to provide quality education and foster intellectual growth in the region.
The commissioning of Bunyoro University is a landmark achievement in the government's efforts to decentralize and expand access to higher education, ensuring that all regions of Uganda benefit from equitable educational opportunities.
