Govt Upgrades Access Roads for New Bunyoro University Site in Kikuube

Government launches road construction project to Bunyoro University site.

Kikuube – The government has launched a project to construct and upgrade 12.5 kilometres of roads leading to the proposed site of Bunyoro University in Buhimba Town Council, Kikuube District. The initiative, which aims to improve infrastructure ahead of the university’s establishment, was officially launched this morning by the Bunyoro University Taskforce Management Committee (TMC) and local leaders.

The road upgrade follows last month’s handover of 100 acres of land, donated by Dr. Henry Wamani—a former lecturer at Makerere University’s School of Public Health—to the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni. The Kikuube District Local Government is implementing the road works under a memorandum of understanding with the TMC.

Prof. Samuel Kyamanywa, Chairperson of the TMC and Vice Chancellor, described the project as a major milestone in the establishment of the university:

“This is a public university open to all Ugandans, but I urge the people of Bunyoro to prepare their children to join and benefit from it. Since it is a science-based university, we must raise performance standards in our secondary schools to feed it effectively.”

Kikuube District Chairperson, Peter Banura, commended local residents for their support and emphasised the transformative impact the institution will have on the sub-region:

“The people of Buhimba have been instrumental in supporting the TMC and local government in these preliminary activities. This university will bring development and opportunities not only to Kikuube but to the entire Bunyoro region.”

Local leaders, including Buhimba Town Council Mayor Mugisa Musa, welcomed the development, noting that easier access to higher education will benefit families who previously struggled with long distances to existing universities:

“We have been failing to take our daughters and sons to university due to long distances. Now we have a chance right here at home.”

As road works begin, officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport are conducting soil tests at the Nyantwe Cell site to determine its suitability for construction. The university’s master plan is in its final stages, and architectural designs are currently underway.
