UNBS Leads the Way: Uganda Garners Triple Victory in Continental Standardization Leadership

Uganda has made history with a triple victory in continental standardization leadership, thanks to the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS). The wins came after recent elections by the African Organization for Standardization (ARSO) held during its 31st General Assembly in Zanzibar.

Uganda's UNBS Executive Director, Eng. James Kasigwa, will represent the country on the ARSO Council for a three-year term starting July 2025. The council oversees ARSO's activities and reports to the General Assembly.

UNBS's Head of Regional and International Liaison, Mr. Joel Peter Oryang, will serve on the SMC for the same term. The SMC manages procedures and processes for harmonizing African standards. Uganda's candidature for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Council was endorsed under Group 4 for the 2026-2028 term. Eng. Kasigwa will lead Uganda's bid, focusing on diversity, digital transformation, and policy engagement.

"Our key priority areas at the ISO council include diversity, digital transformation, and engagement with policymakers. We need to amplify the African voice at the international level and adopt a common African position on policy decisions ."Eng James Kasigwa says.

These milestones demonstrate confidence in UNBS's leadership and provide a platform to influence continental and international standardization policies benefiting Uganda's and Africa's development priorities.
