Residents of Sseke Village Celebrate Power Restoration After Year-Long Blackout
The community of Sseke village in Kinoni Town Council, Lwengo District, erupted in joy as Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) finally replaced their faulty transformer, ending a grueling twelve-month power outage. The long-awaited intervention came after persistent pleas from residents who had endured economic hardships and security challenges in the darkness. Â
Richard Lubega Mulindwa, the local chairperson, revealed the devastating impact of the blackout - paralyzed businesses, spoiled agricultural products, and heightened vulnerability to wildlife attacks at night. Residents particularly lamented their inability to process coffee and protect livestock without electricity. Â
While celebrating the restoration, the community raised urgent concerns about recurring vandalism of power infrastructure. They appealed for security upgrades, including surveillance cameras and street lights along major roads, to deter thieves targeting valuable electrical components. Â
UEDCL technicians, during the installation, educated locals on protecting the new infrastructure, acknowledging previous incidents where unscrupulous individuals had stripped power lines and transformers. The company emphasized community vigilance as critical to sustaining electricity access in the rural settlement. Â
