City Traders Want President Museveni to Appoint a Trader for Trade Minister Position

Traders say that for many years, President Museveni has been appointing Ministers of Trade who are not traders themselves and do not understand traders' issues, which has led to poor communication. This time, they want ministers who come from among them.
They convened in his Lubaga Division in Ndeeba, at their Annual General Meeting, having come from cities like Jinja City, Masaka City, Mbale City, Kampala City, and other cities. These are under the umbrella association, the Federation of Uganda Traders Association (FUTA).

Juma Muyita, the Chairman of traders in Jinja City, praised this move, the request for the President to give them traders as ministers, as a way of appreciating him for campaigning for him in the past elections.

According to Muyita, other traders explained the reason why this time the Ministers of Trade should be traders, saying this will strengthen traders in paying taxes without hiding because they will be understanding.

At this meeting, traders also criticised the government for failing to create a favourable environment that enables them to register and exit from their association, FUTA, and they asked all traders to mobilise the country to support government programs. They also asked the government not to neglect them.

At this meeting, they also discussed the 20 billion shillings the government gave them as relief for the losses of their money in the markets that existed last year in Kampala city. The president of their association, FUTA, John Kabanda, confirmed that this money will be given to the traders at any time.

These traders, also at this meeting, passed their budget for the year 2026-2027, which is 25 billion shillings. They will use this money to promote trade, as well as to create jobs, and they will bring it to the central government and its friends, the donors. And John Kabanda explained this budget.

Separately, regarding the upcoming elections in Uganda, the 2026 elections, traders in Uganda have campaigned for President Museveni and wished him success to win overwhelmingly, thanking him for doing things that benefit them.
