Uganda Joins Africa In Commemorating Anti-Corruption Day 2025

Uganda has joined the rest of Africa in commemorating the African Anti-Corruption Day 2025, with the theme “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption.” This year's commemoration highlights the importance of integrating human dignity into anti-corruption efforts and strategies.

According to IGG Beti Olive Namisango Kampya, corruption is a significant challenge in Africa, with the continent losing an estimated $140 billion annually. In Uganda, the Inspectorate of Government (IG) estimates that the country loses close to UGX 10 trillion annually to corruption.

Uganda has made notable progress in combating corruption, with key achievements including the investigation of 2,218 cases in 2024. Additionally, 1,204 public officials faced administrative actions, and UGX 6.8 billion was recovered in cash and assets. The Anti-Corruption Court has achieved a 40.6% success rate, while the Leadership Code Tribunal boasts a 94.7% success rate.

The commemoration calls on governments, civil society, and citizens to recognize human dignity in all anti-corruption initiatives and protect the most vulnerable from corruption's devastating consequences.

Hon. Beti Kamya believes Uganda can make significant strides in promoting transparency, accountability, and justice. This can be achieved by mobilizing citizens to actively participate in the fight against corruption through awareness campaigns, education, and community engagement. Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of focusing on recovering proceeds of corruption and encouraging citizens to hold leaders accountable and report corruption fearlessly.
