Mukono Police, working with Kyetume local authorities, have apprehended 35-year-old Mwanje David in a breakthrough against violent crime in the region. The arrest comes amid growing concerns about a wave of robberies affecting multiple districts.
The suspect was captured at his Kyetume Village residence in Nakisunga Sub-County, Mukono District, following intensive investigations. Authorities recovered a disturbing collection of items from his possession, including police uniforms, security attire, handcuffs, firearms, and sharp weapons - all suspected to have been used in criminal activities across the region.
This development follows two recent violent incidents that terrorised local communities. At Stabex Fuel Station in Kisoga, armed robbers attacked staff and made off with undisclosed amounts of money, leaving two employees injured. Just days earlier, Nakosi Village experienced similar brazen attacks on local shops.
Police investigations reveal the suspect's alleged criminal network extended beyond Mukono. Last Saturday, he was reportedly involved in an attack on Tirurabira Housi of Namwenda Village in Kamuli District. The victim played a crucial role in helping authorities locate the suspect's hideout in Kyetume.
During interrogation, Mwanje David offered an alternative explanation for the recovered items. He claimed the police uniforms were from his time as a crime preventer, while the firearms allegedly belonged to his former employer, NEC Security Company. The suspect insisted the handcuffs had been in his possession for seven years without use and maintained his primary occupation was brickmaking.
Local leaders have expressed relief at the arrest while highlighting growing security concerns in the area. LC2 Chairman Musisi Samuel and LC1 Chairman Male Julius reported a troubling increase in violent crimes, particularly fuel station robberies and stabbings. They have called for swift prosecution to deter similar offences.
Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest and emphasised ongoing investigations to determine the full extent of the suspect's alleged criminal network. This arrest marks a significant step in addressing the recent crime wave that has unsettled communities across Mukono and neighbouring districts.
