Police in Butambala Arrest Three After Clash Between NUP and Independent Supporters


Three arrested in Butambala for assault, abduction, and damage after a political rally.


BUTAMBALA, UGANDA – The Territorial Police in Butambala District have arrested three individuals in connection with a violent confrontation following a political rally, which resulted in multiple cases of assault, abduction, and malicious damage.

The incident occurred on December 3, 2025, at approximately 1800 hours in Kifampi Village, Bulo Sub-County. According to initial police reports, supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary candidate, Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, clashed with supporters of an independent candidate, Mukibi, as the groups crossed paths after their respective campaign events.

It is alleged that during the altercation, Hon. Kivumbi's supporters overpowered their rivals, leading to the serious injury of several individuals aligned with the independent candidate. Police have registered eight victims from the incident.

The violence escalated with reports of abduction, where victims were allegedly forced into a motor vehicle, registration number UA 983BS, and later released. Additional damages include the theft of a mobile phone and UGX 1.2 million in cash, as well as the shattering of building window panes.

Suspects and Ongoing Investigation

The three individuals arrested in connection with the incident are:
1. Kalumba Badru
2. Kaliila Sulaiman
3. Bukodyo

Authorities have blacklisted the vehicle reportedly used in the abduction. Victims have been issued with Police Form 3 (PF3) for medical examination, and statements have been recorded from both complainants and witnesses as the investigation continues.

In a statement released by Superintendent of Police Lydia Tumushabe, the Public Relations Officer for the Katonga Region, law enforcement strongly condemned the acts of violence.

“We strongly condemn these acts and warn all candidates and their supporters to desist from inciting violence and committing political and electoral offenses,” SP Tumushabe stated. “Such actions not only endanger lives but also undermine the integrity of the electoral process.”

The police have urged all political actors to adhere to campaign guidelines and maintain peace, reminding the public that the full force of the law will be applied against perpetrators of electoral violence.
