Tensions are high in Gomba District as more than 2,000 residents from Maddu and Kyaayi sub-counties have been violently evicted from their land in Kalombe and Nsowe, allegedly taken over by the National Forestry Authority (NFA). The displaced are now camped at Kansiina Primary School, demanding justice.
The evictees accuse NFA of using armed forces to forcefully remove them, with reports of shootings, beatings, and destruction of property. Local leaders say the land, spanning 19 square miles, was granted to NFA in 1964 under President Obote’s regime, but remained unused until 2003, when evictions began.
A crisis meeting was held today, attended by State Minister for Lands Dr. Sam Mayanja, Gomba RDC Ronald Katende, and area MP Robina Rwakojjo. Tempers flared as displaced residents accused leaders of complicity.
The minister reiterated President Museveni’s earlier orders during his visit to Degeya: families must be given 49-year leases to cultivate coffee, fruits, and livestock.
As the standoff continues, the big question remains: Will the displaced families reclaim their land, or will NFA’s grip tighten? For now, they remain in a homeless state at Kansiina Primary School.
