Naguru Police Release 2024 Annual Crime Report

Senior officials from the Uganda Police Force have released the 2024 Annual Crime Report, which reveals a 4.1% increase in crime rates across the country.

During a press conference held at the Police Headquarters in Naguru, leaders from various police departments, including traffic, fire and rescue, and criminal investigations, highlighted key findings from the report.

AIGP Lawrence Nuwabiine, the Director of Traffic and Road Safety, noted that the majority of road accidents occur between Friday and Sunday, with the highest number of incidents recorded at the beginning and end of the week.

He also pointed out that Wednesdays are particularly dangerous, with young people under the age of 35 being the most affected.

Nuwabiine identified regions such as Rwizi and Kampala Metropolitan North as having the highest rates of road accidents. He called on the government to invest in world-class road infrastructure to reduce crime and accidents on highways.

AIGP Steven Tanui, the Director of Fire and Rescue Services, warned Ugandans against refueling vehicles while the engine is running, stating that it is a dangerous practice. He also highlighted the risks associated with poor electrical wiring in homes, which often leads to fires.

Tanui shared that fires caused by electrical faults are among the most common incidents, resulting in significant property losses, especially in urban areas of Uganda.

SCP Beata Chelimo, the Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations, expressed concern over the rising number of suicide cases in the country. She attributed this trend to financial stress and urged Ugandans to seek help and support from one another during difficult times.

The report underscores the need for increased public awareness, improved infrastructure, and stronger community support systems to address the rising crime rates and safety challenges in Uganda.
