According to Bukedi North Region Police Spokesperson Wilfred Kyapasa, preliminary investigations indicate that the Toyota Hiace, traveling from Iganga towards Mbale, rammed into the rear of the stationary Fuso Fighter, which was being loaded with papyrus at the roadside.

"The Fuso Fighter was legally parked along the road, facing Mbale, when the speeding Toyota Hiace collided with it," Kyapasa stated. "The impact was severe, causing extensive damage to both vehicles." The crash claimed the lives of:  Two male adults  ,One female adult  ,Two female juveniles.

Five other victims sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment. Police have not yet released the identities of the deceased, as efforts to notify their families are still underway.

Officers from Kibuku Police Station swiftly arrived at the scene, documenting the wreckage through photographs and sketches. Both vehicles were towed to Tirinyi Police Station for further inspection, while the bodies were taken to Mbale City Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Kyapasa emphasized that preliminary findings point to reckless driving, particularly over-speeding, as the primary cause of the accident. "The driver of the Toyota Hiace failed to control his vehicle, leading to this devastating collision," he said.

This tragic incident has reignited concerns over road safety along the Iganga-Mbale Highway, a route frequently plagued by accidents due to speeding and reckless driving. Local leaders and traffic police have repeatedly urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, especially near populated areas.

Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine if other factors, such as vehicle mechanical failure or driver impairment, contributed to the crash.

As the community mourns the lives lost, police have appealed to witnesses with additional information to come forward to aid the investigation. Meanwhile, families of the victims await official identification and the release of their loved ones' bodies for burial.

This accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of over  speeding and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent further loss of life on Uganda’s roads.
