Fear Grips Ngongolo Village as Alleged Land Grabbers Torch Homes and Wield Machetes

Ngongolo, Kajansi Town Council, Wakiso District – Residents of Ngongolo village are living in fear following a series of violent attacks by a group of individuals allegedly hired to evict them from their land. The assailants, armed with machetes, have been setting houses on fire in what appears to be a campaign of intimidation to force residents off their properties.

The community is now living in a state of constant anxiety. Many are afraid to go to their gardens alone and only move in groups for safety. The residents fear that those attempting to seize their land are capable of harming them physically.

The Local Council One (LC1) Chairman of Ngongolo village, Daniel Nsubuga, confirmed the violence and the use of machetes to intimidate the community.

To understand the root of the conflict, our reporter sought clarification from Chairman Nsubuga. He explained that the dispute originates from a land transaction between two parties.

According to the Chairman, the land originally belonged to a woman named Nakityo Jane, who sold portions of it to various buyers. One of these buyers was Rebecca Nsangi, who purchased seven acres. However, a legal dispute has since arisen.

The residents, particularly those supporting Rebecca Nsangi's claim to the seven acres, are now appealing to President Yoweri Museveni and the Minister of Lands to intervene in the matter, as the legal dispute has escalated into violence.

The residents insist they bought the land legitimately. They showed our team receipts and photographs as evidence of their payments to Nakityo Jane, as well as the sale agreements. The main issue is that Nakityo has refused to hand over the land title, as the lawyer, Zawedde, is preventing her from doing so, demanding her portion of the land first.

When contacted by phone, Nakityo Jane was abusive to our reporters and declined to comment on the allegations, stating that she was not afraid of any consequences.
