Court Grants Bail to 13 Youth Accused of Election Violence in Kyazanga

Thirteen youths accused of violent incidents during Ibrahim Kitatta’s campaign were granted bail. They pleaded not guilty and were released on strict bail conditions.

Masaka Chief Magistrate Simon Toloko has granted bail to 13 youths facing 11 charges related to alleged violent incidents during Ibrahim Kitatta's campaign activities in Bukoto West Constituency. The accused, who all pleaded not guilty, were released on strict bail conditions set at 50 million Ugandan shillings for each surety and 5 million shillings cash bail per accused person.

The charges against the group include assault, theft, vandalism, unlawful possession of military attire, and public disorder. The case has been adjourned until August 21, 2023, to allow the defendants time to prepare their defence.

During the court proceedings, several defendants expressed dissatisfaction with the bail terms. David Ssebuguzi, the Kanakulya Zone Chairperson, and Godious Tebanyenza from Katuulo Village argued that the court disregarded their presumption of innocence. Others, including Yasin Ssegawa from Luyembe Village, noted the prolonged nature of the legal process since the case began.

Female defendants Ziyaada Nakanwaagi and Mary Nakasagga raised security concerns, reporting threats from community members since their arrest. The group warned that perceived unfair treatment could escalate political tensions ahead of future elections.

In a dramatic turn, the accused and their supporters petitioned President Yoweri Museveni to intervene, claiming the charges are politically motivated to suppress youth participation in electoral processes.

The case highlights growing concerns about youth involvement in election-related violence and the judicial system's role in balancing justice with political realities. As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, this proceeding may set important precedents for handling similar cases of alleged electoral violence.
