SIRONKO, UGANDA – The Elgon Region Police are conducting an urgent manhunt for the driver of a tricycle who fled the scene after a fatal road crash that claimed the life of a motorcycle rider in Bukise Village on Monday.
The grim incident, which occurred along the Nalugugu-Butandiga road, has left one person dead and another fighting for their life in the hospital.
According to a detailed account from the Police Spokesperson for the Elgon Region, Mr. Rogers Taitika, the fatal collision happened last night .
"The Elgon Region Police can confirm a fatal road traffic crash at Bukise Village along the Nalugugu-Butandiga road," stated Mr. Taitika. "The incident involved a tricycle, registration number UGD 135W, and a motorcycle, registration number UMA 814BR Bajaj."
Mr. Taitika provided a chilling reconstruction of the event based on preliminary findings.
"Brief facts gathered from the scene indicate that the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions. Upon reaching a steep slope in Bukise Village, the rider of the tricycle, who was reportedly carrying a cow, lost control while descending," he explained. "This loss of control resulted in a head-on collision with the motorcycle, which was climbing the hill at the time."
The impact of the crash was immediately fatal for the motorcycle rider.
"The rider of the motorcycle has been identified as Walabukha Silver, a 40-year-old male adult from Butandiga. He sustained severe injuries and was confirmed deceased at the scene," Taitika confirmed.
The passenger on the motorcycle, whose identity has not yet been released, survived the crash but sustained serious injuries.
"The passenger on the motorcycle was swiftly rushed to Mbale City Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Our thoughts are with the victim and their family for a full and speedy recovery," the spokesperson added.
The primary suspect, the rider of the tricycle, abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene. His current whereabouts are unknown.
"A team of officers from Traffic Sironko visited, documented, and processed the scene. The body of the deceased, Mr. Walabukha Silver, has been transferred to Bundadiri Health Centre IV mortuary, pending a postmortem examination," said Taitika.
He further confirmed that both the tricycle and the motorcycle have been towed to Sironko Central Police Station (CPS) to await a thorough Inspection of Vehicles (IOV).
"The Elgon Region Police have launched a serious manhunt for the errant tricycle rider, and we are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to his apprehension. Inquiries into this tragic incident are ongoing to establish the full cause and circumstances."
Mr. Taitika concluded by urging all road users, especially those operating on rural and hilly terrain, to exercise extreme caution, adhere to speed limits, and ensure their vehicles are not overloaded.
